Mary Queen of Scots
Mary Queen of Scots is a heavy political period film set in the tense time between two Queens jockeying for power and legitimacy in a climate where their own courts work for and against them amidst a religious war. Queen Mary (Ronan) delivers another powerhouse performance steeped in pride, passion and grounded in honest conflict internally and externally. Simultaneously Queen Elizabeth (Robbie) stuns the screen with a physical performance of sometimes subtle internal emotional torture juxtaposed to outward displays of mania and brokenness. This film journeys through a dangerous game of power and purpose and delivers visually and tonally. The story; sometimes so weighty can get loss in its brevity and suffers a bit from a lot of supporting characters that in turn get lost in the sum of its many parts.
